Open for lunch and dinner, including dine-in or take-out options, this Bahamian cuisine restaurant is situated on Little Farmer’s Cay. Bring your swimsuits as this ocean front veranda is located right on one of Exumas sandy white beaches! Ty’s Sunset Bar & Grill is accessible by boat, so be sure to plan in advance and ask your representative at Hideaways for transit options.

The Fish Fry

The last notable place to eat on our list is the Fish Fry in George Town. If you are staying at Hideaways or any of the other nearby resorts, the Fish Fry is close enough for you to walk over to if you are looking for a little bit of exercise. The Fish Fry is a local and tourist favourite, offering a multitude of fish fry stalls full of food and drinks. Some of the stalls you will find are Aces, Big 12 Sports Bar, Charlie’s Restaurant and Bar, Honey Dew, The Out Deck, and Tino’s Deck. We highly recommend Shirley’s for the grouper fingers and Charlie’s for Karaoke. Choose one or hop around and check them all out! Exuma consists of over 365 cays, and between these 365 cays including Great Exuma and Little Exuma island, there are around 125 species of birds taking up residence. For those of you who want to get real adventurous and go off the main island to search for these beautiful creatures, you can rent a boat (or use your own, as yachts tend to travel in these waters throughout the year), and boat along the cays with your binoculars to see what you can spot.

As many of you have seen or heard, the 63rd National Family Island Regatta just passed this last week, and was it ever a hit (as usual)! Five days of sailing races took place at Elizabeth Harbour.

This regatta is one of the oldest annual traditions in Exuma, which initially started in 1954. Keep this event in mind for next year, but don’t worry…. if you like sailing and races, there are still opportunities to see both in Exuma.

Have you ever tried Conch? Are you asking yourself what on Earth this is? You probably aren’t alone in your curiosity. However, you might be familiar with the Conch shell as it is a common shell used for home décor as well as being known for blowing into to make a loud noise.

Inside that shell lives an aquatic species which is a local favorite food in Exuma and the Bahamas. You can enjoy dishes such as conch fritters, conch salad, conch chowder, and the list goes on.

If you missed the National Family Island Regatta, you still have the opportunity to experience three days of sailing at the Barraterre Homecoming Festival and Regatta. This event has been filled with love, laughter, and unity for over 30 years. Come on down to the end of the island and enjoy some tasty Bahamian dishes, native crafts, and enjoy both Rake and Scrape music and the Marching Band. In addition, there will be a Talent Show taking place as well as many games including Hoopla, quadrille dancing, and plaiting of the Maypole. Being held at the St. Margaret Anglican Church, the Labour Day Fair will be celebrated by locals and visitors alike. This is a great family event which will include Bahamian food dishes and lots of games. Although the Labour Day Parade takes place in Nassau, many residents on the surrounding islands celebrate Labour Day by hosting fairs such as this, and spending the day relaxing with family or hanging out on the beach!

Loving that Bahamian food? Head on over to Ramsey to celebrate Ramsey Homecoming Festival! Here you will experience and enjoy authentic Bahamian dishes including crab and rice, macaroni and cheese, baked chicken, and lots more! In addition to the food, there will be musical entertainment as well as fun and games. The Ramsey Homecoming Festival is family friendly and features a kiddie corner where your young ones can play. If you are interested in music and art, you won’t want to miss the Stuart Manor Homecoming Festival! A concert will be held Friday evening and the festival is set to feature national and local artists. After a night of the arts, you can wake up Saturday morning and watch a bike race take place from Ramsey to Stuart Manor. After the race has been won, the day will continue on with family friendly activities at the park. Your young ones especially will have the opportunity to enjoy bouncy castles, while you all enjoy competitions, raffle drawings, a fashion show, and prizes. Food and beverages will be plenty! Just another opportunity for you to enjoy the local cuisine. Little Exuma Island and all of its Offerings

If you are planning a trip to Exuma, it is highly recommended that you explore Little Exuma Island during your visit! Little Exuma Island is a hop, skip, and a jump away from Great Exuma and can be accessed by vehicle by crossing a small bridge that connects the two islands. If you aren’t paying attention, you might actually think they are the same island however, Little Exuma has a lot to offer all on its own. From gorgeous beaches, delicious food, and historical sites, you won’t want to miss out on this short little trip.

Little Exuma Island, like Great Exuma, is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The main beach of attraction is the Tropic of Cancer Beach, and it sure does impress.

Tropic of Cancer Beach (also known as Pelican Beach) is so called because the tropic of cancer line apparently runs through the beach. It received its claim to fame as Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed here and became recognized as one of the prettiest beaches in all of Exuma. The long, crescent shaped beach is graced with gorgeous white sand and teal blue water. It is the largest beach in Little Exuma and is quite often one of the quietest. Don’t be surprised if you find your party to be the sole occupants of the beach while visiting! Be sure to bring your snorkel gear or rent it from Hideaways, as there is ample opportunity to see some unique and colorful fish!

Mom’s Bakery

Sitting right next to Santana’s Grill Pit is a truly local treat. If you give Mom’s Bakery a quick search on the internet, you will find reviews such as ‘Mom’s Bakery is a Must!’ and ‘An Absolutely Brilliant Bakery’. Mom makes fresh baking everyday, including her delicious vanilla or chocolate rum cake. Her baking is so good and so sought after that when she is closed up for the day, Santana’s and other restaurants on the Exuma Islands will often sell her treats as dessert items on their menus.

In Little Exuma, visitors have the opportunity to join a boat tour out to Pigeon Cay and snorkel around to see the remains of shipwreck which dates back more than 200 years. In addition, on one of the highest hills of Little Exuma, lie the remains of an old pirate fort where old cannons can also be found.

Little Exuma appears to have the earliest salt raking, production, and shipping history, dating back as far as the year 1670 and holding steady into the 1860’s. In Williams Town, visitors who are interested in the salt history of Little Exuma can stop and see the remains of the Great Salt Pond, which is a body of water which used to be the site of the salt raking industry.

In addition to salt production, Little Exuma was also known for cotton plantation. The cotton on Little Exuma Island was planted by Loyalists and slaves during the time of salt production and shipping, and carried on into the 1800’s as well. A major tourist attraction on Little Exuma Island is the Hermitage Estate in Willams Town; a cotton plantation site.

Visitors to this site have the opportunity to see the Cotton House, which happens to be the oldest building in the Exuma Islands. The Cotton House was built in the 1750’s by the Kelsall family and is still standing alongside an old Loyalist tomb and partial structures of three slave quarters. In a place which is largely known for it salt production and shipping, the Hermitage Estate ruins are a key reminder on the island of Little Exuma that cotton plantation also took place here.

Whether having visited the Caribbean in the past, or planning a trip in the future, many of you have likely heard about the common excursions available to tourists. Exuma is home to the famous island of Big Major’s Cay, which is also unofficially referred to as Pig Island. Big Major’s Cay earned this nick name as it is an uninhabited island (also known as a cay) populated by resident feral pigs. Yes, you heard right! In Exuma, you can visit Pig Island and be greeted by a colony of friendly and curious pigs. But that’s not all! You will have the unique opportunity to swim in the beautiful, crystal clear waters of the Bahamas with these strong swimmers, all while soaking up the sun, having some laughs, and making heartfelt memories with your friends and family.

You might be wondering; how did these feral pigs end up on this particular uninhabited island? The answer is a bit of a mystery, but a fun one to consider. There are quite a few interesting theories. Some say that the pigs arrived on the island by sailors who brought them and left them there with the intention for later use. Others say they may have been domesticated pigs who got out and stayed out! How ever they arrived on Big Major’s Cay, they are there to stay. Any why wouldn’t they? Beautiful ocean water to swim in, lots of sunrays to soak up, food to eat, as well as visitors to hang out with…. this all sounds pretty nice! The exciting part is that while in Exuma, you have the chance to visit and experience this beautiful and welcoming place.
